AZ Dream Double Up Contest

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3Ex7MLu6nU]

Last Wednesday, May 27th, at Saguaro Lake marked the 2nd Double Up Battle hosted by The AZ Dream. Two teams picked by honorary captains Matt Vansteenkiste (aka Stinky) and Christian Deon (aka Menace) went head to head in an all or nothing double up contest. In true school yard fashion, a politically charged match of “Rock, Paper, Scissors” decided which captain got first pick out of the riders in attendance. Stinky’s “Team Booyah” included heavy hitters Ben Christensen (Company team rider) and Larry Taylor (Slingshot team rider) with Derek Borum, Chris Garvy, and Brian Hartman filling in the lineup. “Team Menace” pickup up local favorite Jimmy Wolf followed by Joe Shipka, Matt Coldren, Nick Wittl, and Justin Teich. Alternating teams, each rider got two double up attempts behind the 2008 Nautique 230 Team Edition.

After waiting out some afternoon wind gusts, Jimmy was first off the dock setting the pace high with a solid hs bs 540. Chris Garvy and Joe Shipka both couldn’t find their landings but when Derek Borum took a break from driving to take his pull, he made a lofty heelside frontside 540 look easy. Matt Coldren answered right back with one of the biggest nose grab heel 3’s I’ve ever seen him throw, with enough hang time for us in the boat to yell and turn to each other in amazement before he even came back down . Some wicked spills including Brian Hartman’s double backroll attempt left us all wanting to pop an Aspirin. However, Ben Christensen and Larry Taylor proved style and consistency will win every time taking the win for Team Booyah with a heelside 720 and a backside 180 respectively.

Special thanks to Company Wakeboards, Reef Clothing, Red Bull, Von Zipper, Freestyle Watches, and Century Marine for helping support The AZ Dream. For more info about The AZ Dream and upcoming events visit www.theazdream.net or join “The AZ Dream” group on Facebook.
